of these various places. dallas, texas. you have a store in maryland. you have stores here in california that we're expecting later in the day. so tlar number of stores across the country where we're seeing more of these protests. but walmart says you have to look beyond just the bodies there. when they look at who showed up and walked off the shop, only about 50 employees did not show up as they were scheduled. they're saying they have the same number of employees who didn't show up for work last year as they had this year. so what walmart is saying is they believe and they keep pushing this, is this is a union-backed effort that as far as the walmart employees, they believe this is limited. talk to some of these people in the picket lines today and they will tell you that this is a very important move for them. that they are hoping to make a message on a potent shopping day. >> i'm getting the sense that the protest and picket lines are keeping any shoppers away? >> not at all. when actually we talked to some of the employees who were working overnight here at this particular walmart the emplo

's in paramount, california, where there are big crowds in the parking lot. who is protesting the retail chain and what are they actually hoping to accomplish? >> they're not all this from this store, and the reason why they are targeting the most important shopping day of the year to be out here in front of these stores is to remind shoppers and management that there are some serious problems here with the workers, with pay and health care. this is something twheer seeing not just in the store, but marshally across the country. from texas to maryland. there are employees who are not showing up for work. here's what one employee told us. >> we don't want customers to walk from wal-mart. this is how we pay our bills. with them this is how the store stays open. it's awesome. what we're trying to do is get a point across. that's all we're trying to do. wal-mart, help us. >> reporter: so trying to make a point. the question is has wal-mart management heard? at this point it does appear that management and these protests who are outside aren't going to be coming to the table to have any real open h

is standing outside a walmart in paramount, california. you were in the middle of the protests today. tell us what happened. >> reporter: this is a very large protest here, joe. there were at the height of this the l.a. county sheriff's department estimating about 1,000 protesters in or around this particular walmart. and this protest, it was loud, it was ruckus, it was the very opposite of what you might expect on a black friday shopping day here at a walmart. and that's the point. the employees who walked off the job joined by many supporters and labor say they want today make the point to management that they want to have a fair discussion about pay, about health care as well about the hours that they work. they chose black friday, a very potent day to make that point. here's what an employee as well as a shopper told us what they think. >> they say do this, do that. none of it works. this is the only way we can get our voice out there is speaking with the media, the public. >> just a matter that they have to, you know, do things right for the employees. >> doing things right for the emplo
